Chapter Thirteen

Lucy and Caroline sat in their newly acquired lock-up. It was about the size of a double bedroom, and there was enough space to do what Lucy wanted. It was basically a garage in the East End, away from homes or pedestrians, situated round the back of a housing estate. Caroline had paid to rent it for the week over Christmas, and Lucy smiled. Her plan to incarcerate Susie during the festive season, minimal people around, basically locking her up to have the shittiest Christmas ever, was just the start. By New Year’s Eve she would be dead, Lucy and Caroline going out to celebrate not only their freedom but a job well done.

They’d spent the time since Lucy had written the note sightseeing. She’d wanted Susie to stew after she’d read that letter and seen the graffiti. Susie would be bricking it with every passing hour, wondering when Lucy would come for her. Idly, she wondered whether Mrs Eldon had been found yet. Had her daughter phoned and got no answer, getting anxious and asking one of the neighbours to nip round and do a wellness check? After all, Mrs Eldon had been as old as the bloody hills, fragile, prone to falling and hurting herself.

Prone to an angry woman going to her door and battering the shit out of her with a walking stick. By the time Lucy had finished, with a few stamps of her boot, Mrs Eldon had a broken skull.

No more than she deserved for not telling the police where Susie was.

They’d been to Ann Summers earlier to buy some handcuffs, then to B&Q for a saw and hammer, Lucy talking loudly at the till about having to do DIY now their husbands had left them, all for the benefit of the cashier. It wasn’t deemed suspicious to buy those tools, but Lucy had felt compelled to chatter about it anyway, Caroline giving her an evil look, telling her she was overdoing it.

It was all right for Caroline, she’d done this sort of thing before. She knew how to play it cool. Lucy was still a novice, and no amount of planning would make her an expert. The actual doing was far more worrying than imagining it.

“Right, we’re all set up.” Caroline opened the coil of rope she’d picked up in another B&Q after they’d been to the first one. She put it on the floor and stared at the packet of microfibre cloths from Home Bargains.

“I can’t wait to stuff those in her gob,” Lucy said.

“After she’s talked, of course.”

“Of course.”

Lucy smiled. Soon, she’d have Susie right where she wanted her.
